These Substitutes Can Make Almost Any Recipe Vegetarian

by Hannah Kuhn

Are you tired of always having to look for vegetarian recipes? It can seem like they are in short supply sometimes. Luckily, there is another way to go about this. You can instead look for standard recipes and use the substitutions below to convert them to vegetarian recipes.

Seitan is a meat substitute made from wheat gluten. It has a texture similar to that of ground beef. It makes an excellent substitute for ground meat in anything from a burger recipe to a meatloaf recipe. You can also use seitan as a meat substitute in dishes that call for sausage or meatballs.

Jackfruit is a large, tropical fruit with flesh that shreds easily. When it is shredded, it resembles pulled pork, both in texture and appearance. You can use jackfruit as a substitute in any dish that calls for shredded meat. It's a good option for vegetarian sandwich recipes and also barbecue dishes.

Tofu is perhaps the best-known vegetarian meat substitute. It is made from soybeans that have been ground and pressed together. You can soak tofu in almost any marinade and it will take on the flavor of that marinade. Tofu is a great substitute in almost any stir fry recipe. It works well in most Asian noodle dishes and fried rice dishes, too. Any recipe that calls for diced chicken or pork can easily be made with diced tofu instead.

Tempeh is similar to tofu in that it is made from soybeans. However, the soybeans in tempeh are fermented first, which gives this meat substitute a deeper, richer flavor. You can use tempeh in recipes that call for beef as it lends a similar deep flavor and rich texture. Tempeh can be marinated, and it works well in stir-fries and fried rice, too.

Black Beans

Black beans are one of the most natural vegetarian meat substitutes. You can buy them pre-canned so that they take very little time to prepare. Use them as a substitute for ground meat in recipes such as those for tacos and burritos. They can also be a good meat substitute in chilies and soups. Most people use them whole, but you can grind them up if you'd rather have something that more closely resembles ground meat.

Any recipe can be a vegetarian recipe if you keep these substitutes on hand. Each one has its own nuances and its own most ideal uses.
